Winter car care if your car is sitting in the driveway

Winter car care if your car is sitting in the driveway

If you are not driving as much during these winter months, don't forget about your necessary car maintenance. As icy and pouring rain descended across the Carolinas Thursday and with so many people working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, some Carolinians are not driving as often.  While that might be good news when it comes to putting serious mileage on your vehicle, it can be bad news for other aspects of your car. First up, when cold nights hit and you aren't driving as much, car battery care needs to be front-of-mind so you don’t get stuck when you hop in your vehicle again. One way to prevent this issue is to buy ... read more

Tips on Keeping Your Car Clean While Traveling

AAA estimates more than 50 million Americans are taking a road trip this week for Thanksgiving.    That includes about 2.5 million Floridians.  Again, that's despite the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urging people to stay home because of the spike in coronavirus cases across the country.     So, if you are going to hit the road anyway, there are some things you can do to help keep yourself safe in your car.   Many of us who are working from home may not be driving our cars every day, but keeping it clean needs to be a priority, especially when traveling.  When you get in your car, wipe down all the touchpoints. Things like the steering wheel, blinker, door handles, seat belt latch, radio and cup holders, and even your key fob.  Then you need to clean those hands.    "I would keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer, maybe a small package of sanitizing wipes in their vehicle. I also know some people keep an ex ... read more

Expert Offers Vehicle Safety Checklist Ahead of Thanksgiving Travel Season

More people may stay at home for Thanksgiving due to the pandemic, but millions of Americans are still expected to hit the roads for the holiday. Thanksgiving air travel is expected to be way down as the country continues to battle the coronavirus.  With that being said, now is not the time to let up on the gas when it comes to getting your vehicle ready, a local expert told WDRB News.  "Particularly now as we're trying to get through this virus, a lot of us are distracted, and we just don't pay attention to some of the things that we used to," said George Kok of Mr. Transmission.  Kok recommends creating a safety kit that includes masks, a thermometer, hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies to wipe everything down.  "Gas pumps are probably one of the dirtiest things you'll ever touch," he said. Tire pressure is one of ... read more

Transmission Transition: Passing the Family Business to the Next Generation

Randy Whitworth sits in the middle of three generations who have all worked in the auto repair business. His father was a diesel mechanic, and he followed suit, spending more than 40 years in automotive repair. For the past 34 years, he has been in business for himself. Today his three adult children also have followed suit, and all work with or near him in their home state of Alabama. “Car repair is in our family’s blood,” says the 61-year-old. So is succession planning. Whitworth got his first taste of franchising in the mid-1980s when he opened his first Mr. Transmission. He liked the way the model worked so he bought another nearby in 2007. Today he owns Mr. Transmission shops in Riverchase and Pelham, Alabama. His daughter Amberly manages the Riverchase shop, and his son Randall manages the Pelham location. Kimberly, his elder daughter, opened her own Mr ... read more
