Automatic vs. Manual: Which One Should You Choose?

Trying to decide between a stick shift or an automatic? Mr. Transmission can help you take a closer look at the ins and outs of both automatic and manual transmissions and give you the lowdown to make a choice that's right for you.

What’s the Difference?
To make an informed decision, you need to grasp the fundamental differences between automatic and manual transmissions. A manual transmission, often known as a stick shift, requires the driver to manually shift gears using a clutch pedal and a gear stick. In contrast, an automatic transmission does all the gear-shifting work for you, without a clutch pedal.

With high demand for automatic vehicles, manual transmissions are becoming increasingly rare. Only a small fraction of cars in the United States now come standard with a manual transmission. Only 35 car models in 2023 offered the option of a manual transmission, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Despite the limited number of stick shift vehicles currently available, there are signs they may be making a comeback. In 2020, manual transmission vehicles represented only 2.4% of vehicle sales at CarMax. Stick shift sales inched up to 2.9% of sales in 2022. Young male car buyers primarily drove the uptick, CarMax reports. Manual transmissions were most popular in New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, New York, and Connecticut.

Pros and Cons of a Stick Shift
Let’s explore some pros and cons to help you make an informed decision.

PROS:

  • Fuel efficiency: With greater control over gear shifting, skilled drivers can optimize fuel consumption, often outperforming automatics by three to four miles per gallon.
  • Maintenance: Manual transmissions are simpler and often cheaper to maintain due to fewer moving parts.
  • Cost: Historically, manual vehicles are less expensive than their automatic counterparts.
  • Driver engagement: Many drivers prefer manuals for an enhanced driving experience and control, especially in challenging conditions like poor weather or uphill driving.

CONS:

  • Availability: Finding new vehicles with manual transmissions is becoming increasingly difficult.
  • Learning curve: Operating a stick shift requires more skill and concentration, which can be challenging for inexperienced drivers or those who multitask while driving.

Automatic Transmissions: The Modern Standard
Automatic transmissions are now the norm, with an estimated 90% of vehicles on the road featuring automatic gearboxes.

PROS:

  • Convenience: Automatics are easier to drive, especially in heavy traffic, as they eliminate the need to manually shift gears.
  • Accessibility: They are more accessible to a broader range of drivers, including those who may find operating a clutch difficult.
  • Resale value: Due to their popularity, automatic vehicles have better resale value.

CONS:

  • Cost: Automatics can be more expensive to buy and maintain.
  • Fuel efficiency: Automatics were less fuel-efficient, though this gap is closing with modern advancements.
