What’s the Difference?
To make an informed decision, you need to grasp the fundamental differences between automatic and manual transmissions. A manual transmission, often known as a stick shift, requires the driver to manually shift gears using a clutch pedal and a gear stick. In contrast, an automatic transmission does all the gear-shifting work for you, without a clutch pedal.
With high demand for automatic vehicles, manual transmissions are becoming increasingly rare. Only a small fraction of cars in the United States now come standard with a manual transmission. Only 35 car models in 2023 offered the option of a manual transmission, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Despite the limited number of stick shift vehicles currently available, there are signs they may be making a comeback. In 2020, manual transmission vehicles represented only 2.4% of vehicle sales at CarMax. Stick shift sales inched up to 2.9% of sales in 2022. Young male car buyers primarily drove the uptick, CarMax reports. Manual transmissions were most popular in New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, New York, and Connecticut.
